Trimming a parrot's beak, emptying a dog's anal glands and
neutering a cat - then lunch - followed by some tricky horse
dentistry, amputating a lamb's leg and calming a distressed
client... It's all in a day's work if you're a vet: a delicate
balance of managing animal welfare and ethics, educating people in
pet ownership and aligning their expectations with real-life
outcomes. As a job, it spans everything from managing the
heartbreak of euthanasia, to informing owners that under no
circumstances should they take their dog's worming pills, even if
they're sure they have worms. During his twenty-five-year career,
Welsh vet Siôn Rowlands has experienced almost every animal
medical issue imaginable, from rescuing an injured horse from the
edge of a cliff to moisturizing a baby elephant. He's also
witnessed ridiculous moments, surreal situations and the real toll
it can take on a person. Frank, funny and moving in equal measure,
Letting the Cat Out of the Bag is a rare glimpse behind the scenes
of the uniquely pressurised world of being a vet.

Independent 'Food for short story lovers everywhere' Irish Times *A
major celebration of the French short story and Spectator Book of
the Year* The short story has a rich tradition in French
literature. This feast of an anthology celebrates its most famous
practitioners, as well as newly translated writers ready for
rediscovery. The first volume spans four hundred years, taking the
reader from the sixteenth century to the 'golden age' of the fin de
siècle. Its pages are populated by lovers, phantoms, cardinals,
labourers, enchanted statues, gentleman burglars, retired
bureaucrats, panthers and parrots, in a cacophony of styles and
voices. From the affairs of Madame de Lafayette to the polemic
realism of Victor Hugo, the supernatural mystery of Guy de
Maupassant to the dark sensuality of Rachilde, this is the place to

Marianne is eight years old when her mother goes missing. Left
behind with her baby brother and grieving father in a ramshackle
house on the edge of a small village, she clings to the fragmented
memories of her mother’s love; the smell of fresh herbs, the
games they played, and the songs and stories of her
childhood. As time passes, Marianne struggles to adjust,
fixated on her mother’s disappearance and the secrets she’s
sure her father is keeping from her. Discovering a medieval poem
called Pearl and trusting in its promise of consolation, Marianne
sets out to make a visual illustration of it, a task that she
returns to over and over but somehow never manages to
complete. Tormented by an unmarked gravestone in an
abandoned chapel and the tidal pull of the river, her childhood
home begins to crumble as the past leads her down a path of
self-destruction. But can art heal Marianne? And will her own
future as a mother help her find peace?

The demilitarisation and neutralisation of the Aland Islands is a
confirmation of, and an exception to, the collective security
system in present-day international affairs. Its core idea is that
there is no need for military presence in the territory of the
islands and that they are to be kept out of military activities. A
restricted use of military force has a confidence building effect
in cases where competing interests may be so intense that banning
the very presence of military force remains the only viable option.
The regime of the Aland Islands is the result of pragmatic and
contingent political compromises. As such, the case of the Aland
Islands offers an alternative trajectory to the increased
militarisation we witness around the world today. Through
parliamentary and archival materials, international treaties and
academic works, the authors examine the legal rules and
institutional structures of the demilitarisation regime. In this
process they reassess core concepts of international law and
international affairs, such as sovereignty and security, and
introduce a theoretical view on the empirical case study of the
Aland Islands. The book covers legal, political and policy
discursive aspects of demilitarisation, international co-operation,
defence and security matters around the Baltic Sea with a broader
European and global relevance. It can be a source of inspiration
for all those in search of constructive efforts that can address
territorial disputes and security challenges.

Introducing Little Clothbound Classics: irresistible, mini editions
of short stories, novellas and essays from the world's greatest
writers, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith.
Celebrating the range and diversity of Penguin Classics, they take
us from snowy Japan to springtime Vienna, from haunted New England
to a sun-drenched Mediterranean island, and from a game of chess on
the ocean to a love story on the moon. Beautifully designed and
printed, these collectible editions are bound in colourful, tactile
cloth and stamped with foil. Often described as the father of the
modern short story, there is perhaps no other writer more closely
associated with the form than Guy de Maupassant. Included here is
his most famous story, 'Boule de Suif', as well as tales of love,
such as the brilliant 'Happiness', and the supernatural, like the
chilling 'The Horla'.
An in-depth examination of a film widely considered to be one of
the points of origin for youth film studies and youth cultures in
the US An interdisciplinary approach provided by the book’s
co-authoring by a film scholar and a sociologist and the ways in
which these perspectives work together in a single book An
extremely well known title of a song and a film that is bound to
attract attention from scholars from other fields and more general
readership
Nanobiotechnology is a new interdisciplinary science with
revolutionary perspectives arising from the fact that at nanosize
the behaviour and characteristics of matter change with respect to
ordinary macroscopic dimensions. Nanotechnology is a new way for
producing and getting materials, structures and devices with
greatly improved or completely new properties and functionalities.
This book provides an introductory overview of the
nanobiotechnology world along with a general technical framework
about mathematical modelling through which we today study the
phenomena of charge transport at the nanometer level. Although it
is not a purely mathematics or physics book, it introduces the
basic mathematical and physical notions that are important and
necessary for theory and applications in nanobiotechnology.
Therefore, it can be considered an extended formulary of basic and
advanced concepts. It can be the starting point for discussions and
insights and can be used for further developments in
mathematical-physical modelling linked to the nanobiotechnology
world. The book is dedicated to all those who follow their ideas in
life and pursue their choices with determination and firmness, in a
free and independent way.
